Higher Council of Magistracy holds deliberations at Unity Palace

The Head of State His Excellency Paul BIYA has presided over the meeting of the Higher Council of Magistracy that met at Unity Palace on 18 April 2012 to examine various matters patterning to the career of Magistrates


Following a decision signed by the President of the Republic on 10 April 2012 scheduling a meeting of the Higher Council of Magistracy, President Paul BIYA today presided over the meeting that started at 10 a.m. and lasted nearly four hours.

Speaking to the press at the end of the sitting, the Minister of State, Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Laurent ESSO, disclosed that the Council examined disciplinary files, as is usual, and other issues pertaining to the promotion and transfer of Magistrates. 

Another important issue examined during the sitting was the appeals for clemency, sent in by people who have been sentenced for various offences and are serving jail sentences or facing the death penalty. The Minister of Justice explained that the Council gives an opinion on such matters, while the Head of State takes the final decision.
