Cameroon woman jailed in Maldives passes away in hospital
A Cameroon woman serving a 25 year sentence in Maldives has passed away while receiving treatment in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The Cameroon woman was convicted and jailed in 2010 for drug trafficking and Haveeru has found that she died after losing the battle with AIDS.
An official of the Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Service (DPRS) said the inmate had been in critical condition before she passed away on Saturday. Official did not disclose further details.
DPRS had earlier said the woman had been transferred to IGMH from Maafushi prison in serious condition. Given her critical condition, DPRS had sought the permission of the Immigration Department to take her abroad for treatment. But the serious nature of her condition had prevented the authorities from doing so.
